Alfred M. Bailey papers 1912-1978.

This large collection holds the papers and photographs of A.M. Bailey, Director of the Denver Museum of Natural History (now the Denver Museum of Nature & Science) from 1936-1969, and Curator of Birds and Mammals from 1921-1926. The papers are stored in eighty-two boxes and are arranged by record type, then chronologically and then by subject. The Bailey collection contains extensive notes and photographs from his own field expeditions, which took him to all continents of the world. He also contributed articles to many publications, both popular, such as Field and Stream, and scholarly, such as The Journal of Mammalogy. Bailey was very interested in the development of the Museum and was involved in the creation and installation of popular dioramas that illustrated the content of the museum collections. In the collection, there are 15,900 images of flora, fauna, people and scenery in various formats, ranging from prints and negatives to glass based images, movie film and 35mm slides. These images were used for Bailey's many lectures and publications. His ethnographical photographs of Alaska natives, images taken in the 1920s, have gained international recognition as important windows on the folkways of the area from that time. These images also included views showing the impact twentieth century innovations were making on the population. The papers in the collection also document museum administration and collection specimen acquisition.
